JuneteenthJuneteenth (short for "June Nineteenth") marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, TX in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. It has been celebrated annually on June 19th in various parts of the country since 1865, but it became an official federal U.S. holiday on June 17, 2021. This holiday commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United Stated and is considered the longest-running African American holiday.
